✔ Effective in diagnosing and managing certain arrhythmias.
✔ Promotes vasodilation and improves muscle oxygenation.
✔ May assist in reducing muscle fatigue and stress during intensive exercise.
✔ Provides short-acting but powerful cardiovascular regulation, allowing controlled use in diagnostics and treatment.

Product Details
  • Adenosine is a purine nucleoside naturally present in the body, playing key roles in cellular energy transfer (ATP/ADP/AMP) and neuromodulation.

  • Supplied as a sterile injectable solution in a 50 mL multiple-dose vial by Equimed USA.

Mechanism of Action

  • Acts on adenosine receptors (A1, A2A, A2B, A3) to regulate cardiovascular, neurological, and muscular functions.

  • Causes transient slowing of AV nodal conduction → useful in managing arrhythmias.

  • Promotes vasodilation → enhances blood flow and tissue oxygenation.

  • Plays a role in anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective pathways.

Veterinary Applications

  • Cardiac Uses:

    • Management of certain tachyarrhythmias (especially supraventricular tachycardia).

  • Exercise Physiology / Performance Horses:

    • Studied for its role in muscle blood flow, recovery, and fatigue reduction.

  • Research & Specialized Therapies:

    • Sometimes investigated for its anti-inflammatory and metabolic effects in equine medicine.

Administration & Dosage

  • Administered intravenously (IV) for rapid cardiac effects.

  • Dosing varies depending on species, indication, and clinical setting.

  • Must be given under strict veterinary supervision due to strong cardiovascular effects.

Benefits

✔ Effective in diagnosing and managing certain arrhythmias.
✔ Promotes vasodilation and improves muscle oxygenation.
✔ May assist in reducing muscle fatigue and stress during intensive exercise.
✔ Provides short-acting but powerful cardiovascular regulation, allowing controlled use in diagnostics and treatment.

Precautions

  • Can cause bradycardia, hypotension, or transient asystole if misused.

  • Short half-life → effects are brief but immediate.

  • Must be used with emergency monitoring.

  • Regulatory Status:

    • Banned in competition (FEI, HISA, Dubai Racing Authority) due to potential performance enhancement and cardiovascular effects.

    • Withdrawal times must be carefully observed.
